Have you ever watched the movie Good Morning Vietnam with Robin Williams? That's how I begin to explain what I did in the Air Force as an American Forces Radio & Television broadcaster. Whether it was "MoonDog Outside The Wire" or "Mike In The Morning", if you were ever in Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany, Italy, Korea or Japan in the last 26 years you may have heard me waking-up our service members with the hottest entertainment and information from home.
On the air I jokingly referred to my mission as "Defending The Top 40", but I took giving my listeners a taste of home seriously. From the time of the Gulf War, through Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan I took my show on the road-- providing tunes for convoys of Soldiers retaking Kuwait, entrenched with the Peshmerga in Iraq, and flying in Blackhawks through the Hindu Kush. You've never experienced anything like hanging out with your listeners in a Bashir Valley mud hole trading MRE [Meals Ready To Eat] recipes with guys far from home.
I started my broadcasting career announcing made-up groups and interviewing my playmates into a vintage 1960's Solid State portable tape recorder -- which was fun to hide in the living room when the adults where visiting. That's how I discovered ...well, never mind!
Since my fake interviews of the 60's, I've met and interviewed Kid Rock, Duran Duran, Jennifer Lopez, Ja Rule, Willie Nelson, Foreigner, Patti LaBelle, Paul Overstreet, Big & Rich, Lone Star, Gatlin Brothers, Rudy Boesch from Survivor, and worked with Elvis Duran and the Morning Zoo right after 911, providing trips home for the holidays to our
troops and families. No matter who I interviewed-- it was always the most fun getting local service and family members on the air to play games and give away stuff -- a dinner, a trip, but mostly moments to laugh and smile when nobody from home was close enough to hold your hand. I enjoyed every minute of serving my nation as an American Forces Radio broadcaster, but the time past too quickly. Now as a U.S. Air Force retiree and Christian I'm on fire to bring the same entertainment programming zeal to the Church.
I love the Christian music industry and think that KLOVE/AIR 1 and Salem Broadcasting, just to mention two great organizations, that do a bang-up job. But, there are a host of unknown Christian artists and songs that never get played. Your friends and neighbors -- great artists who don't have labels. visibility or know-how. MoonDog Radio is sort of a farm-team for major league radio stations. The place to get your original Christian music noticed 24/7 by fans and Christian radio stations around the world. If you have a well produced song that you'd like considered for air, then send now to MoonDog_Radio@yahoo.com via Google Drive or leave a message.
DJ's - this is also the place to begin your radio career or host a weekly program for your church group. I can provide the air-time, training, and feedack -- better stuff than you'll get at the Columbia School of Broadcasting -- I guarantee it. I thank God for this opportunity to have fun and communicate in a way that glorifies God, educates, and influences our culture in positive ways. I like to laugh and have fun while I'm doing that. This is in no way an exhaustive list; however, in the interest of full disclosure a few of my pastoral, theological, and apologetic influences include Francis Schaefer, Alvin Plantinga, William Lane Craig, J.P. Mooreland, Ravi Zacharias, John Lennox, Alister McGrath, Gary Habermas, Francis Beckwith, Michael Licona, Paul Copan, Norman Geisler, Lee Stroebel, Mary Jo Sharp, David Jeremiah, Greg Laurie, Robert Jeffers, Rick Warren, and the late Jerry Falwell, Sr.,Chuck Smith, and Gretchen Passantino..
Blessings In Christ!
